Distinguished and Famous people from Wanneroo
๐ก James and Mary Ann Cockman
James and Mary Ann Cockman built their family life around the farm and house near Lake Joondalup. James and his sons quarried limestone and prepared timber while continuing dairy farming and market gardening. The substantial limestone house was completed in 1860 and became known for offering hospitality to passing travellers. Wanneroo's first Road Board meeting was held there in 1871. After James's death, Mary Ann continued living with the next generation for many years. The preserved house records both the work of establishing a home and its wider use in a developing rural community.
๐ Mary Lindsay
Mary Lindsay's coastal property at Yanchep gained a permanent homestead in 1926, built by the Bunnings brothers. The estate later passed into other hands, but a personal letter in Wanneroo's museum collection preserves a small glimpse of her interests: writing to Dorothy Cockman about a pony named Mickie shortly before her death in 1960. The house's later restoration gave it a new role as a community arts and culture centre. Her local story thus survives through both a prominent coastal building and ordinary correspondence between people connected with the property.
